About Boulderfield
Hello!
My name is Steve Squier, and I am the owner and the sole employee/principal consultant at Boulderfield Educational Consultants (BEC).
After working in the higher education field for almost 30 years at four different community/two-year colleges, I have come to respect and appreciate the mission of these institutions and the struggles faced by the dedicated personnel who are tasked with providing innovative educational opportunities to our students. My company was formed exclusively to address these community college challenges.
Why Boulderfield was Created
As anyone who is employed by a community college is aware, we must frequently wear many different hats to achieve our college’s purpose and mission, which means that we are explicitly involved in important initiatives oftentimes significantly outside our personal areas of comfort/expertise.
As an employee, I have worked for institutions in a myriad of roles, including as Adjunct Instructor, Tenured Full-Time Professor, Director of Academic Assessment, Dean of Math, Science & Business, and Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences. In all of these roles, I have contributed in diverse areas of the college, ranging from academic affairs and student services, to payroll, finance, and human resources, to college-level strategic planning. This has provided me with a more global perspective of the complex interactions between departments, divisions and major institutional areas.
Through my higher educational career, I have noticed that many times key strategic plans/projects are less successful than envisioned because of the obscureness or impracticality of college processes that guide their work. Boulderfield Educational Consultants was created to “give back” my knowledge and experience in process development to help other institutions navigate the complex higher education environment.
Key Focus for Boulderfield
I have endeavored in my career to modify/adapt existing college processes and foster/develop new processes to align more thoughtfully with the challenges of operating a college under tight financial constraints. I am able to leverage and apply project management and data analysis experience gained from my former business profession as a research project engineer for the aerospace industry to assist colleges in this effort.
Streamlining and/or developing alternative and unique processes targeted towards a specific community college’s needs and organizational structure helps improve productivity and morale, clarify roles and responsibilities, and provide traceability for accreditation reviews. The strength of my company lies not only in the creation of process enhancements, but also constructing the custom software tools necessary to implement these processes that interfaces with a college’s enterprise system. Other consultants that are inexperienced with the community college environment often struggle with the complex interrelated issues present.
